Changes to the DBI service model

How is DBI changing?

We are improving access for Victorian builders who choose to purchase and manage DBI from the VMIA.

To do this, we are introducing a new way for builders to handle their DBI. We are not making wholesale product changes, but rather introducing a new process and system for managing DBI. Please see the Minister's press release here [PDF, 123KB]

An online portal called BuildVic will streamline the process of purchasing and managing DBI, giving builders online access via multiple devices.

We are also introducing a panel of DBI Distributors. This panel will give builders access to BuildVic and act as a point of contact for DBI-related matters. The members of the panel are:

Some builders will already be aligned to a DBI Distributor via their existing broker, while other builders will need to choose a Distributor.

Builders wishing to continue to purchase and manage their DBI via their insurance broker will still have the option to do so. However, they must first ensure they have a BuildVic account set up with a Distributor.

Insurance brokers

Brokers that are not a DBI Distributor will still be able to manage DBI on behalf of their clients; however, this process will change.

Currently, brokers obtain VMIA DBI on behalf of their clients via QBE. VMIA’s existing arrangement with QBE will end on 30 June 2017. From this time, brokers will no longer have access to VMIA DBI from QBE.

Brokers can work with their client to support them in choosing a DBI Distributor, as well as gaining consent from them on purchasing and managing their DBI in the future.

When is this happening?

We will launch the BuildVic portal on 1 July 2017.

In the meantime, builders will receive a letter advising them of the change and the steps they are required to take. If you have not received a letter by end June please contact VMIA via email dbinomination@vmia.vic.gov.au.

The process for making a DBI claim is not changing, nor is the criteria for eligible claims. Homeowners wishing to make a claim should follow the procedure outlined in the claims area.
